Driving Northeast to Cedar Island in North Carolina

Eric & I leave Myrtle Beach
on a rainy morning.

We fuel up the motorhome in South Carolina.  (Eric gassed up the car at Costco and got the best price on gas in the Myrtle Beach area.)  Gas and diesel prices per gallon are 15 to 25 cents more in North Carolina.

We enter North Carolina.

Today's drive takes us
up US Route 17 North.

Welcome to Camp Lejeune

Eric's family name morphed
over the years to LaJuene.

We left Schenectady, New York on a road trip, destination south, on a Sunday in late March, 1981. Eric and I drove to Camp Lejeune before we turned north.

We turn onto North
Carolina Route 24 East.

Eric commented on the
name of this restaurant.

Isn't every restaurant's
kitchen SANITARY?

Eric reminded me of our rushed drive to catch the last ferry from Cedar Island 34  years ago.

Welcome to Cedar Island

Eric & I stayed at the Driftwood
Motel 34 years ago, in March.

We got to the ferry on time,
only to find out it was
 cancelled because of a storm.

The woman who sold us the ticket for the ferry told us that it closed last week.  From the photos on this Trip Advisor link, the motel became rundown in the intervening years.

The ferry has room for
us....  all 55 feet.

Our motorhome is 40 feet long.  The Blue Ox tow bar and Jeep add the remaining 15 feet.

I take a few pictures
while we wait.
